Spam Nonsense

Spammers are often trying to make themselves appear more legitimate. In my opinion, this is one of the prime indications that spammers know that what they are doing is unethical. They hide themselves and pretend to be something they are not. In fact, they often go to great lengths to convince everyone that what they are doing is correct and right.

The note below is one such attempt. It tries to appeal to our patriotic sense - somehow, sending spam is helping Americans everywhere. I like the part about "Internet Terrorists". I thought that was a great touch, a somewhat feeble attempt to make people believe these poor spammers are actually doing something worth protecting.

ALSO TAKE NOTE: At the time of this mailing the return email address is a bonafide legitimate return email address that was signed up for with the express purpose of receiving all undeliverable emails as well as remove requests. On occasion the return email address provided may become disrupted by the efforts of, what we define as, Internet terrorists. If this is the case and you wish removal please call us. If you fax a copy of your phone bill where you called us for removal we will reimburse you via PayPal.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Amendment I, The US Constitution

Another common spammer trick - trying to make you believe that you somehow, somwhere asked for their junk. Just silliness, smoke and mirrors.

This mail is never sent unsolicited. This is a iPowerWeb.com mailing! You subscribed to receive this at DOOG.COM. We have partnered with DOOG to provide you with business, discounts and special offers. To unsubscribe FORWARD this ENTIRE message to remove@ipowerweb.com

It's very common for spam to cite experts to support their cause. This is also very common in many scams and con jobs. The line below tries to make the spammers offer look more legitimate. In actuality, the mere inclusion of this paragraph screams "scam"!

These guys try and make it appear that you have somehow, in some vague way, asked to receive their spam. Generally, in real opt-in lists, the author is very specific. Spam tends to be general (or specific and fake).

************************************************************* This is a 100% opt-in list. If this is not correct in your case, please reply to: <mailto: remmenow@uol.com.ar?subject=PleaseRemove> This is not a SPAM. You are receiving this because you are on a opt-in list and you have opted to receive information about business opportunities. If you did not opt in to receive information on business opportunities then please accept our apology. To be REMOVED from this list simply reply with REMOVE as the subject. And you will NEVER receive another email from me. *************************************************************

The email message below is really clever. The spammer tries to get your email address twice - to opt in and to opt out. Either way, you lose.

We are in the process of creating an email service.

If you enjoy receiving items such as DISCOUNT COUPONS and SPECIAL OFFERS about ONLINE GAMBLING via email, and would like us to send them to you, please send an email to the proper address below.

1 - I would like to receive future messages from your casino which may include COUPONS, DISCOUNTS, FREE ITEMS or other SPECIAL OFFERS. tccoptin@yahoo.com

2 - I would not like to receive future messages from this email service. tccoptout@yahoo.com

Your email address will be used in accordance with our privacy policy and will not be disclosed to third parties. If you later change your mind about our casino e-mail service, each e-mail we send to you will give you the opportunity to tell us you would not like to continue to receive such e-mails.

Please do not reply to this message. The address is automated, unattended, and cannot help with questions or requests

This spam tries to make itself look legitimate by citing a non-existent bill. Bill 1618 was never passed.

This message is in full compliance with U.S. Federal requirements for commercial email under bill S.1618 Title lll, Section 301, Paragraph (a)(2)(C) passed by the 105th U.S. Congress and cannot be considered SPAM since it includes a remove mechanism.

Sometimes spam tries to garner sympathy - perhaps the careless spammer just sent you a message by mistake? A link to a major spamming company at the bottom of the email is a significant clue this message is not so innocent.

Hi! My name is Angela Westin. I got your e-mail address off a post. Please forgive me if I made an error; I'm a two-fingered typist. I put this little note together to show people that it's not impossible to lose any amount of weight that you want! I hope you find this information useful.

These guys try to make it look like they are a real honest company by claiming they will come down hard on spamming attempts.
