Email discussion lists are a great way to communicate with a group of people. These are very different from newsgroups, in that there is no central location where you can view threads and join in conversations.

One of several things can happen when you join a discussion list.

1. You can receive a periodic newsletter, which you often can contribute articles to.
2. You can receive many postings directly from other people on the list, and you can send your own postings. What happens here is you send an email to the list, which forwards it to the other list members. As can be expected, these can result in a lot of emails.

Discussion lists can be cool if you find a good one with active participants. It increases communications, and it tends to be a little more real time than newsgroups, yet not as up-to-the-second as a chat.
